How Will I know if I have Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a very common problem. You may not even be aware that you have a gum problem until it is detected by your dentist, or when the symptoms become very uncomfortable and start bothering you with pain. Knowing the earliest signs of gum disease can help you in fighting back against this problem, so you can seek professional dental help before the condition worsens into something more complicated.

These are the most common symptoms of gum disease:

  • Bleeding gums (when eating something hard, or when tooth brushing)

  • Red or swollen gums

  • Painful or tender gums, especially when touched

  • Gums that separate from the base of the teeth, making the teeth look longer or bigger

  • Loose teeth

  • Mouth sores on the gums

  • Bad breath that won’t go away

  • Receding gums

  • Pus between the teeth and gums

  • Changes in the bite (the way your teeth come together)

Gum disease in its early stages (gingivitis) can be detected by your dentist, which is why it is very important for you to have regular dental checkups at New Kings Road Dental Practice. Early detection will help in the successful treatment of gum problems before they become more complicated (periodontitis), which can lead to tooth loss if left untreated.

How to Prevent Gum Disease

  • Practice good oral hygiene habits. Brush your teeth regularly and use dental floss to remove food pieces stuck between the teeth and the gum line, which may cause harmful bacteria buildup on the surface of the teeth and gums.

  • Use an antibacterial mouthwash that helps protect your teeth and gums from plaque buildup.

  • Visit your dentist regularly so early gum disease symptoms can be detected and treated in the soonest possible time. Early treatment is important in the successful fight against gum problems.

  • Stop smoking. Tobacco use and cigarette smoking can cause inflammation and can damage your gum tissue, leaving you more prone to gum problems.

Treatments for Gum Disease Eradication

Non-Surgical Gum Treatments – Scaling is a non-surgical treatment that removes tartar buildup above and below the gum line. Root planing is done to remove rough spots on the tooth roots for bacteria removal.

Surgical Gum Treatments – Bone and gum grafts are examples of surgical treatments for gum disease eradication. These are done to encourage the growth of new bone tissue and gum tissue, after the damage done by progressive gum problems. Flap surgery involves surgically lifting the gums to remove tartar deposits under the gum line. Other surgical gum disease treatments include crown lengthening, and pocket reduction procedures.
