What are the Common Dental Emergency Situations?

  • Toothache – Severe toothache can leave you unable to do anything else. In some cases, the pain can be so severe that it spreads to the rest of the face or the head area. Extreme tooth pain can be caused by a dental abscess, trapped objects between teeth, cavities, gum problems, or trauma to the specific area. If you cannot bear the pain any longer, an emergency dental treatment within the same day is needed. The urgent treatment will also help prevent the spread of infection.

  • Lost Dental Filling or Crowns – Lost dental crowns or fillings can expose the affected teeth to pain and sensitivity. The cavity left will also be prone to being filled with food pieces and other debris, and may be the cause additional discomfort. Same day emergency treatment is needed to fill the cavity left by the lost filling or crown to keep the tooth protected and free from pain.

  • Impacted Tooth – An impacted tooth grows sideways, and does not come out from under the gum line the way other teeth normally do. As a result, this tooth pushes against the neighbouring teeth, causing severe pain. An impacted tooth is also more prone to tooth decay since it is very difficult to clean with regular tooth brushing. The extreme pain that comes from an impacted tooth will need to be solved by seeing an emergency dentist, for quick yet long-lasting pain relief.

  • Knocked-Out Tooth – A knocked-out tooth usually results from accidents and sports injuries, when the mouth area is subjected to blunt trauma. When a tooth is knocked out whole and cleanly from the tooth socket, there is still a chance that it can be re-attached successfully. However, you will have to see a dentist for urgent treatment within one hour from the accident, as the possibility of successfully re-attaching the tooth diminishes after that hour has passed.

  • Injuries to Soft Tissue – The parts of your mouth with soft tissue include your lips, gums, tongue, and inner cheeks. If any of these soft tissue parts are injured, bleeding will most likely be present. Bleeding can be stopped before seeing the dentist by applying pressure to the area. However, you will need to urgently see a dentist at NKRD for emergency treatment if the bleeding is profuse, or if the bleeding cannot be controlled even after you have applied pressure to the area.
